Situated along a major thoroughfare that connects the island to each shoreline, Pineda Island is located in Mobile Bay in Mobile, Alabama. By this time the circle was already very much a part of Goldberg's design vocabulary, and the circle was a central component of the recreation center he designed for the island. The focal point was a large pool and swim club surrounded by a circular arrangement of hotel rooms. The plan included an international festival market, shopping center, comprised of four-cube like structures tucked beneath massive umbrella like roofs whose dynamic forms recall futuristic thatch roofed huts. The entertainment complex featured a bowling alley, dance pavilion, pool, restaurant, bar, racquet club, rod and gun club, and even a teenage club.
Construction was begun, and although it never progressed beyond a few columns, one can see the remains of those columns still in the marsh today. These curvilinear and columnar shapes foreshadow the forms of Marina City.
